These nerve cells (motor neurones) are found in the brain and spinal cord. The muscles, with no stimulus from the nerves, gradually weaken and waste away. One new person is diagnosed with MND everyday in Australia. There is no known cause or cure. Common symptoms Mild weakness in one or more limbs, muscle wasting, twitching or cramps, a husky voice, difficulty with swallowing, speech, breathing or mobility. Some people become completely paralysed and unable to speak. Because intellect, vision, hearing and sense of touch are unaffected in most cases, awareness of their condition remains intact. What happens? MND creates increasing levels of disability, reduces independence and finally causes death. Average life expectancy is 1 - 5 years from diagnosis. Some people live with mild disability for more than twenty years.
