Epic Mens Club Pairs Final

The Mens Club Pairs Final was played at Ivanhoe as a twilight match on 15 December between Peter Pervaz/Tom Ristic and Graeme Bertram/Alan Willocks.

The game played over 18 ends started in dramatically with a first end measure declared by Frank Whillans as a no result.  The game settled in over the next few ends with Tom leading 3-1 after four ends with very tight heads.  On end 5, Tom was holding 2 shots but Alan trailed the kitty for 5 with the last bowl.  With two shots on the next end, Graeme and Alan were leading 8-3.

With a three to Tom on end 7 and four more shots in the next 4 ends saw him leading 10-9 after 11 ends.  On end 12 with Alan holding shot with a close toucher, Tom  tried to knock the bowl and spring the jack.  Alan then tucked the jack away for a count of 3 and a lead of 12-10.  With Tom and Peter holding 5 on the next end, but with the jack available Alan  put it into the ditch to be holding 4 (one close and the others 3m away!).  Tom's first and Alan's second bowl finished in the ditch with perfect line on top of the jack. Tom's last bowl just managed to cut the count down to 1.

The next end was pivotal in the game.  Graeme has drawn two close shots, with Peter's bowls slightly wide behind the jack.  Tom moved the kitty to be holding 3.   Alan played a backhand shot looking to get in close but was slightly over weight and knocked hisr closest bowl further away.  Tom and Peter drew another two shots for a 4 and 14-13 score line.

Scores were level at 14 all going into the 16th end. With two down, Graeme has picked up the jack and trailed it to be one down but with a close measure and 2 to Tom.

In fading light away from the clubhouse, Peter has drawn 2 close bowls (schmicky doodahs as Tom called them) to start.  Bowls were moved around during the end and when Tom drew a very close bowl for 2, he led by four shots going into the last end.

Playing back to the clubhouse, Graeme has drawn a close shot with Peter's bowls behind and a wall of 3 bowls about 0.5m in front of Graeme's shot.  The head is not looking like either team is going to get a big count.  Tom put his second last bowl well behind.  Alan looking for some luck played into the head to rearrange the bowls.  And so it did, leaving two opposition bowls just in front of jack.  With an inviting split and possibility of hitting and  taking out Tom's only other close bowl that would have take the game into another end.  Peter spotted this and asked Tom to play another position bowl which he did.  This left Alan with only one shot and that was to play into the bowls for a split.  We will never know what could have happened because the bowl was slightly wide and missed the target.

Congratulations and well done to Peter and Tom on their 18-15 win.  This win gives them consecutive pairs titles.
